Texas Tumbleweed and Dust Storm Family Road Trip Adventure

We recently drove from Angel Fire, New Mexico to Dallas, Texas. We had a excellent time in Angel Fire (review to be posted soon). Our road trip with the kids to Dallas was somewhat of an adventure. We encountered winding, icy, mountainous roads, massive tumbleweed, high winds, a dust storm, and snow and ice with high winds.

Here is a video of the huge Texas Tumbleweed and Dust Storm near the border of New Mexico and Texas around Dalhart, Texas.

Leaving Angel Fire, New Mexico the road was quite treacherous. Going through the mountains the roads were icy and curvy. The view was spectacular, but the drive was a little scary.

As we got close to the border of New Mexico and Texas the ice began to disappear, and  we started to see tumbleweed. I have lived in Texas all of my life and have never really seen tumbleweed. We saw a few tumbleweed cross the road and thought it was quite funny.

Then, the tumbleweed started getting bigger and bigger. The wind pick up speed and my husband had to dodge massive Texas Tumbleweed crossing the highway in front of us. They looked like bushes rolling across the highway. A few even hit our windshield. My husband compared to the drive to a video game. As we passed each level the tumbleweed got bigger and the wind got stronger. Then, during the final level a dust storm blew though. It was crazy! The scene was something out of a movie or cartoon. Texas tumbleweed is real and big! Everything is bigger in Texas, right?

We weren’t done… as we got to Amarillo, Texas the winds picked up again and it started snowing and sleeting for about another 6o miles or so.

What an adventure!

We were so glad to finally make it to Dallas and get out of the car.
