According to a company statement, the parking brake could become inoperative in these vehicles.

“If this occurs and the driver exits the vehicle with the transmission in a gear other than ‘Park’ while the ignition is on, the vehicle could roll away, increasing the risk of a crash,” Toyota said.

The Associated Press reports that Toyota has received reports of crashes, injuries and deaths. However, the automaker has not provided additional details.

Toyota dealers will add clips on the top of the brake cable dust boots to prevent the cable from becoming inoperative. Owners will be notified by mail in November about the free repair. 

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has a tool on its website to let you see if there’s a recall on your vehicle. Simply go to safercar.gov/vin and enter your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).
