Here’s why avocado prices are going up

According to NBC 7 San Diego, growers in Mexico aren’t happy with the prices they’ve been receiving for avocados, so they’ve been slowing down the harvest.

This has resulted in a shortage that’s affecting restaurants and grocery stores across America.

NBC 7 reported that about 40 million pounds of avocados are typically transported from Mexico to the U.S. every week, but less than half that amount was shipped a few weeks ago.

On top of that, the California drought is affecting avocado growers here in the United States.

According to CNBC, some Mexican restaurants are having to temporarily take guacamole off the menu, though Chipotle reportedly says it hasn’t had any issues with the food supply and won’t raise prices.

Produce experts told CNBC that higher avocado prices at the supermarket could stick around until after the Super Bowl.

While it seems that grocery stores and warehouse clubs everywhere are having to raise their prices because of the shortage, let us know on Facebook or Twitter if you spot a deal.

In the meantime, look for offers on these cash back grocery apps to help offset the cost hike.
