For years I’ve been testing recipes, mostly to share with my readers, but also to hone my kitchen skills. Often it’s a matter of scaling to multiply, but also to divide, i.e., halve a recipe to feed 4 when it is written to feed 8. Or upgrade to serve 12.

That’s where these conversions have drilled themselves into my head. Of all the conversions to know, teaspoons to tablespoons has is one of the most useful that I’ve committed to memory.

Remember this conversion for the future: 1 tablespoon equals exactly 3 teaspoons. Another way to state this: 1T = 3t.

If you’re scaling a recipe up or down, going from tablespoons to teaspoons isn’t as straightforward as scaling from cups. You use a half-cup measurement when making a recipe that calls for one cup, and you want to cut it in half.

However, when doubling a recipe for one-and-a-half teaspoons, learning to convert teaspoons to tablespoons can make your entire process much smoother. You’ll know that three teaspoons equal one tablespoon, so you only have to measure once instead of scooping three teaspoons.

This is an invaluable tip for properly scaling everything from spices to salt to leaveners, like baking soda or baking powder.

Measuring Spoon Tips

Keep your measuring spoons organized to make cooking, baking, and everything else you do in the kitchen a breeze!

This set of measuring spoons includes 1/2T (one-half tablespoon). While I know that 1/2T = 1 1/2t, having that handy size in reach is awesome.
