I especially like this during the Target Toy Clearance when items start getting marked 50-70% off but the signs in the area still say 15-30% off. You can tell by looking at the tags quickly how much the discount is and it’s a good way to snatch up those bargains before the end cap signs are updated.

There is one tip that I haven’t mentioned in a while that I thought I would mention because a lot of people think the last number has something to do with the cost. It used to be thought the last number determined if the item would be marked down again but we have found that even if the last number ends in a 4 there’s a chance the item will be marked down again.

The actual cost of the item is based on the original cost. You can see in these 2 instances, both items are marked 50% off, the second one that ends in a 4 is just a function of the original cost.

So if you find an item marked to 50% and the cost ends in a 4 then you don’t need to worry about it there is still a chance the item will be marked even lower!

Remember, Just because an item might be marked down lower doesn’t mean it will still be available by the next markdown cycle, items frequently sell quickly at my store once they hit 50%.

TIPS FROM THE PROS One more thing to keep in mind is that the number in the top right is the Current % markdown, so if that number says 50 the item is currently 50% off, if the number in the top right says 30 the item is marked 30% off. This is helpful when there aren’t any signs near the item.
