Misfits Market offers lower prices on organic produce and pantry staples compared to services like Instacart and Amazon Fresh. The selection is smaller, but the quality has been good, even with slight imperfections in the produce.

Delivery Considerations: If you're in their truck delivery zone, items arrive fresh the same day. However, outside this zone, third-party carriers may cause delays. Misfits uses cooler packs instead of dry ice, which means meat may arrive thawed during longer transit times.

Best for: Those who value time savings and can be flexible with meal planning, or people without access to high-quality organic produce. If your items are being shipped via a third-party carrier, be cautious with ordering fragile items like raspberries and refrigerated items like dairy, meat, and eggs as they can be affected by shipping delays.

Misfits Market Pros:
  • The prices are lower compared to other delivery services.
  • They carry primarily organic grocery items.
  • Available in numerous food deserts within the United States.
  • Shipping is free, on any order size, if you join Misfit+.
  • Low minimum order requirement of $15.
Misfits Market Cons:
  • It’s not always clear why an item is available or where it’s sourced from.
  • Misfit+ is $69/year, no monthly option.
  • Potential for long transit times can impact product quality.
  • Delivers wine but there's a three-bottle minimum and an $8.99 alcohol service fee.

What Is Misfits Market?

Misfits Market is an online grocery delivery service that works with a variety of suppliers to bring you fresh, organic produce and pantry staples.

It’s one of the numerous “imperfect food” businesses that has launched in recent years, and is best-known for offering items that have cosmetic imperfections. Typically, this means things like irregular size or coloring.

These imperfections are frequently small and insignificant when you’re not comparing them side-by-side to the perfectly-shaped fruit and vegetables you might find in a local grocery store.

As an example, here’s a photo of the carrots and cucumber I received in my first Misfits box.

Frequently, under normal circumstances, these items would end up as food waste , either not shipped to grocery stores at all, or passed over by shoppers until they need to be thrown away.

Misfits Market’s goal is to purchase this imperfect produce from suppliers at a cost savings, and then pass that savings on to you in the form of lower prices.

Note: For numerous people, Misfits Market is another option in the fast-growing grocery delivery market. For numerous others, it’s one of the only ways to affordably access fresh produce: the U.S.D.A. estimates that over 20 million people in the United States live in a food desert, and one of Misfits Market’s goals is to serve these communities in an effort to eradicate food deserts by 2025.

How Does Misfits Market Work?

Once you sign up for Misfits Market, you’re assigned a delivery day based on where you live. You’ll then have a three-day shopping window to select the items you want included in your Misfits box.

It’s only once your shopping window is open that you’re able to see the items available for that week.

The Misfits Market item selection process.

While there are a lot of mainstays, the available items change constantly. Frequently, that reflects changes in seasonal produce, but sometimes it’s because supply of the “imperfect” version of an item has run out.

It’s key to note that your delivery day is not guaranteed. Along with delivering via their own network of trucks to some locations, Misfits Market ships via an array of third-party carriers and does not offer guaranteed delivery services. So while most packages arrive as expected (including mine), be aware that early or late deliveries are possible.

How Misfit+ Works

Misfits+, which is a new feature added in October 2024, costs $69 per year and offers members exclusive deals and free shipping on every order.

While most items are priced similarly to what non-members see, the real benefit is access to exclusive weekly discounts and free shipping. When they say you can “save up to 50%,” it refers to retail grocery store prices, not additional savings on items already discounted on Misfits Market.

If you order at least once a month, the free shipping alone can make the membership worthwhile. It takes around ten orders to break even. The downside is that you can’t see what deals are available until you pay for the membership, which means you’re committing for an entire year without knowing if it’s worth it.

Misfit Market Perks

The Misfits Perks program rewards you with points for every dollar you spend.

If you’re on their weekly grocery plan, you earn 2 points for every $1 spent. If you shop without a plan (a la carte), you earn 1 point for each dollar.

When I login, I see options redeem points for free items like avocados, apples, or snacks. In addition to purchases, you can also earn points by doing things like signing up for an account (25 points), downloading their app (15 points), and celebrating your membership anniversary (75 points).

Points can expire after 365 days or if you don’t order for 60 days. You can track your points in the “Shop with Points” aisle, and once you’ve earned enough, you can add free items to your cart. Points can’t be used for alcohol or gift cards.
