When Simon saw that the Spirit was given at the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money and said, “Give me also this ability so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.” Peter answered: “May your money perish with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money! Acts 8:18-20

There are only so many thing money can buy. It can buy a new car, a new house, or even the loyalty of a person for a while. But money can’t bring happiness, and it can’t buy your salvation. As it mentions in this verse, money can’t buy the “gift of God”, in other words, it can’t buy spiritual gifts, and in some respects is essentially useless in matters of faith. Sure, it can be useful for certain ends, but it isn’t a replacement for faith and diligence to God’s word.
