Oops: Starbucks accidentally raises prices early

In an official press release, Starbucks said that the pricing error was due to the new amounts being prematurely entered into the point of sale systems and encouraged shoppers who were overcharged to call the Starbucks Customer Service hotline for assistance.

On July 12, Starbucks is planning a small cost increase on select beverages. Unfortunately, that cost adjustment was prematurely entered into the point of sale systems in our U.S. company-operated stores. As a result, some shoppers were charged incorrectly. The maximum any customer could have been overcharged is 30 cents per beverage.

The error has been corrected and we sincerely apologize to our shoppers for the inconvenience. If a customer believes this mistake impacted the cost of their beverage, we encourage them to please contact Starbucks Customer Service at 1-800-782-7282, and we will gladly make this right.

This is not the first time Starbucks has raised its prices.

Thoughout the years, Starbucks has raised the prices of various beverages. A tall (small) cup of coffee at Starbucks in 2007 was $1.75; today it’s $1.92. A grande (medium) Vanilla Latte cost about $4.15 in 2007 with tax; today it is around $4.60 with tax. Last year, Starbucks raised the prices of its beverages between $0.05 and $0.20

The maximum cost increase will be as much as $.30 on July 12, which is likely to spark criticism from shoppers. Earlier this year, Starbucks shoppers weren’t too happy about changes to the rewards program
