How to work out a BOGO or multi-buy deal
Multi-buy offers like "buy one get one free", "3 for 2" or "buy one get the second half price" sound great, but the real discount is rarely the big number on the label. The trick is to look at the price per item once the free or reduced items are spread across everything you buy.
Real price per item = Total you pay ÷ Number of items you take home
For a true buy-one-get-one-free deal you pay for half the items, so the effective discount is 50% — but only if you actually want (and will use) both items. A "3 for 2" works out to about 33% off, and "buy one get the second 50% off" is only 25% off across the pair.
Is a BOGO deal actually worth it?
- Only count it as a saving if you would have bought both items anyway — otherwise you are spending more, not saving.
- Check the per-unit price; sometimes a different size or brand is cheaper even without the deal.
- Watch expiry dates on food deals — a "free" item you throw away is not a saving.
Frequently asked questions
How much do you save with buy one get one free?
A genuine buy-one-get-one-free deal is a 50% discount, because you pay for one item and take home two. The saving only counts if you need both items.
What discount is 3 for 2?
A 3-for-2 offer is about a 33% discount — you get three items but only pay for two, so each item effectively costs two-thirds of its normal price.
Is buy one get one half price a good deal?
Buy one get the second half price is a 25% discount across the two items, since only the second item is reduced by 50%. It is smaller than a full BOGO, but still worthwhile if you need both.
