How to calculate a discount
Working out a discount by hand is simple once you know the formula. To find a percentage discount, multiply the original price by the discount rate, then subtract that from the price:
Sale price = Original price − (Original price × Discount % ÷ 100)
For example, a $100 item with 20% off saves you $20, so you pay $80. The calculator above does this instantly, and also handles fixed-amount discounts, a second stacked discount, sales tax and quantity.
How stacked discounts work
When you stack two discounts, they apply one after the other — not added together. A 20% coupon followed by an extra 10% off is not 30% off. The second discount comes off the already-reduced price, so the real saving is slightly less than the two numbers added up.
Tips to save more
- Always check whether a percentage or a fixed-amount coupon saves more on your basket — it changes with the price.
- Look for stackable offers (a store sale plus a coupon plus cashback) to compound your savings.
- Remember tax is usually applied after the discount, so a bigger discount also lowers the tax you pay.
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate a discount?
Multiply the original price by the discount percentage and divide by 100 to get the amount off, then subtract it from the price. For example, 20% off a $100 item is $20 off, so the sale price is $80.
Do stacked discounts add together?
No. Stacked discounts apply one after another. A 20% discount followed by an extra 10% is applied to the already-reduced price, so the total saving is less than 30%.
Is this discount calculator free?
